Scroll through Instagram and Tiktok, and you will quickly notice: plants are truly taking over the Internet. Plantfluencers - often calling themselves plant parents - are fussing over their little protégés and sharing everything you need to know to care for your plants and get the maximum out of them. They share pictures of their plant hunts and apartments, soon to be turned into the newest urban jungle.

Some trace the trend back to the Covid-19 pandemic, others say it already started before. But there is one thing we know for sure: with people locked inside and not being able to enjoy the great outdoors, bringing greenery inside seemed like THE perfect alternative solution. Over time, those digital creators turned greenery into something far beyond just a visual. It is now associated with a culture, a lifestyle - some kind of cool community you want to belong to.

Plants as Lifestyle Symbols

Plantfluencers do more than just show their latest Monsteras or how their Pileas is propagating - they are all about how to create peace of mind by creating your haven at home. Their feeds are filled with tips on slowing down, finding moments of calm, and reconnecting with nature in hectic lives. In a way, plants have come to represent ideals for values like wellness, sustainability and balance. Following a plant parent is less like following an expert and is more like joining a lifestyle.

Why Social Media Loves Plantfluencers And Their Greenery

Plants were made to be Internet famous: they are tailor-made for platforms built on visuals! First, they are endlessly photogenic - no matter which angle you surprise them with. Second, they constantly evolve, which creates a perfect opportunity for before / after pictures (and we know everybody loves that). And lastly, they spark interaction! Sections under green posts are booming with likes, shares and comments. Followers love to leave a comment about their care fails, or ask for tips for stubborn species.

From Niche Hobby to Cultural Movement

What started as a niche subculture is now integrated into mainstream culture! In addition to collaborating with lifestyle businesses and appearing in the media, plantfluencers have an impact on everything from co-working and café designs to trends in home décor. They blur the line between hobby and identity — demonstrating that in 2025, caring for plants is not just about greenery, it is about being part of a larger cultural moment.

Why are you the right person to talk about this subject?

I have been running different social media accounts for work and also just for fun, so I notice trends pretty quickly. Plantfluencers really caught my eye during the pandemic! Suddenly, everyone had time for new hobbies, but we could not go outside much — so plants became the perfect way to bring nature indoors. Ever since, I have kept following the trend closely, especially on TikTok and Instagram.

In your opinion, why are plantfluencers so popular now?

I think it is because so many of us want to reconnect with nature, even if it is just in small ways. But buying even one houseplant can become overwhelming without the appropriate knowledge. Plantfluencers make it so much easier. They share tips in such a simple and friendly way that you actually feel like, ‘Yes, I can do this too!’

How do plantfluencers affect the way people think about greenery?

They definitely shape what is trendy! One great example is the Monstera Thai Constellation. Back in 2020, it was super rare. Then it went viral on social media, and suddenly everyone wanted one. Prices were sky-high at first, but now it is again much more accessible. That is the kind of impact plantfluencers have — they make certain plants desirable and even change the market a bit.

How can businesses take inspiration from them?

For me, plantfluencers show that plants are not just pretty decor. They are living beings that bring so much energy and good vibes into a space. If you bring that mindset into an office, it changes the atmosphere. It os not only about making a space look nice — it is about showing you care for healthy workplaces and for the living things inside them! And that is also what we try to teach at Oxygen at Work!

What do you personally like most about this trend?

I absolutely love plant rescues! Some plantfluencers take sad-looking plants that seem beyond saving and give them a second life. It’s amazing to watch the transformation and see the effort and knowledge behind it. My favorite plantfluencer is @plantswithkrystal — she does a lot of rescues, and even though she has nearly 2 million followers, she still feels super personal and down-to-earth. That authenticity is what makes her so inspiring.
